Who killed MLK?
James Earl Ray. He was born in Alton, Illinois on April 10, 1928. He was the eldest out of eight children. Ray had a hard life. He moved from Alton to Ewing, Missouri in 1935 because his father was accused of forgery. Two years after that, his young sister, Mary, died in a fire after playing with matches and catching herself on fire. When he was 16, he left his parents and went to stay with his Grandmother in Alton. He got a job in the dye room of the International Shoe Tannery. He was laid off work in 1945. After this, he enlisted in the army, getting stationed in West Germany. He found out he could not deal with the strict code of conduct. He was charged for being drunk and breaking arrest, before getting discharged for inaptness and lack of adaptability in 1948. He was unstable when he returned home and got many odd jobs. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail for robbing a café, and continued to do small crimes, getting various jail time. In 1959, Ray, on parole for an earlier theft, robbed two St. Louis grocery stores, as well as another in Alton. In March 1960 Ray started a 20-year sentence. After killing Dr. King, and getting shot, he was sent to 99 years in prison for the crime. Ray died in jail on April 23, 1998.
